COLUMBIA, MO. -- Auctioneers sold items from Missouri’s largest lost and found at Columbia’s Hilton Garden Inn Conference Center.
Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel held his second Unclaimed Property Auction since taking office.
An autograph from former St. Louis Cardinals short stop Ozzie Smith went for $25.
More than a thousand items were auctioned, including gold, silver and collectible coins.
Auction items are collected from safe deposit boxes turned over to the state after 5 years of no contact with the owners. However, money raised from the auctions go back to the owner's name.
Zweifel stopped the sale of military medals.
Zweifel said, “I stopped that process when I took office. We’ve been able to return more veterans medals than anytime in the history of the state. We’ve been able to place those back into the hands of family members, veterans museums and organizations.”
Zweifel said the items from Tuesday’s auction represent less than 1% of the $600 million held in more than 3.5 million owner accounts.
