JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Dozens of volunteers helped clean up the Missouri River Saturday.
The Missouri River relief hosted the river cleanup in Jefferson City at the Carl Noren Access.
Boats ferried volunteers to the river banks and islands to pick up trash that has washed up on shore.
Event organizers said the clean-ups provided a unique opportunity to experience the Missouri River close up while helping restore the river for future generations to enjoy.
"This is a great opportunity for people to get out, get dirty, get muddy, really get to feel what the river is all about and do something positive at the same time," Missouri River Relief Program Manager Steve Schnarr said.
Saturday’s effort was part of the Big Muddy Clean Sweep.
It was the first of a string of clean ups that are set to take place across Missouri in the next month and a half.
The final stop will be in St. Louis.
