Update: Friday, Sept. 30 at 6:25 p.m.:
Within minutes of Robin Carnahan’s decision, Kansas City State Representative Jason Kander, another democrat, announced he would run to replace her.
Republican state senators Scott Rupp, of Wentzville, and Bill Stouffer, of Napton, had earlier announced plans to run for secretary of state.
Original Story:
Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan says she will not seek re-election in 2012.
Carnahan said Friday that she plans to return to the private sector when her term as secretary of state ends in January 2013. She did not rule out another run for office in the future.
Carnahan, a Democrat, lost a campaign for U.S. Senate last year to Republican Roy Blunt. She first won election as secretary of state in 2004.
Carnahan is the daughter of the late-Gov. Mel Carnahan and former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan. One of her brothers is U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan.
