COLUMBIA, MO. -- Members of Columbia’s Citizens Police Review Board have sent a finalized list of proposed changes to their ordinances to the city council.
The council created the board 2 years ago to improve the relationship between the Columbia Police Department and the public.
Board members want council members to redefine the word “misconduct” so that includes any violation of federal, state or city laws.
The proposed changes also force police administrators to post their policies on line and provide the review board with monthly and annual complaint reports.
Columbia Councilwoman Helen Anthony said, “I’m relieved that it’s actually reaching the council. I spent some time speaking to members of the citizens police review board. I think they have been doing a good job according to the ordinance. I do understand Chief Burton’s position as it has been articulated on the city council floor. I am just appreciative that the parties have come together to reach an agreement.”
Columbia City Council members are expected to approve the proposed changes recommended by the Citizens Police Review Board at their next meeting on Monday night.
