Teen driver death rate is up

A new study shows fatal crashes involving teen drivers are down for one age group but up for another.

In our facebook story of the day, fatal crashes are down for 16-year olds but just the opposite for 18-year olds.

During the 1986 to 2007 American Medical Association study, there were nearly 132,000 fatal crashes involving drivers aged 16 to 19.

Nearly 20 percent involved 16-year-old drivers, while almost 30 percent involved 18-year olds.

Here in Missouri the findings aren't a shock to the Highway Patrol.

Sgt. Paul Reinch said, "In the state of Missouri teenagers are about ten percent of drivers but account for one third of all crashes, with that low number of drivers out there but high number of crashes we're just asking teenagers to take their time and obey all traffic signals and rules and just learn as you go and get behind the wheel."

Reinch says parents should lead by example because a lot of times teens will pick up bad driving habits from parents like talking and texting while driving and following cars to close.
