JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- New restrictions in Missouri on synthetic substances that can mimic the effects of illegal drugs are now in place.

It is the second time in as many years that Missouri has targeted the synthetics. This year's measure regulates chemicals that are similar to synthetic cannabinoids as well as other substances that have been used in other synthetics.

Officials say the substances can mimic the effects of illegal drugs such as cocaine and marijuana. Legislators in states across the country have targeted the synthetic substances.

The new restrictions are among several laws going into effect Sunday. Other new laws include additional restrictions for late-term abortions and new policies for handling young athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion.
