COLUMBIA, MO. -- Mizzou sets another record with a total student enrollment of 33,318 students on the first day of classes.
That’s more than 1,300 students this year than last year at this time.
Mizzou officials said more than 7,100 students are living in campus dorms this semester. Students have been moving in since last Wednesday.
Some students like Mizzou Freshman Lauren Nieman are living in temporary housing until more permanent dorm rooms become available later this fall. Nieman is currently living in a double room with a residential life staff member.
Nieman said, “I have to move in two to four weeks. It’s kind of complicated. I’m trying to get to be roommates with another girl. Hopefully, it will work out.”
MU Residential Life Director Frankie Minor said it’s not unusual for incoming freshmen with active contracts to still be without a permanent dorm room on the first day of classes.
Minor said, “Each year we seem to be saying that we have the largest freshman class in MU’s history. It’s a great trend to continue. It does pose some challenges. We have to get a little creative in the use of our space. We have room for all of the first-time college students who needed housing, unfortunately we had to turn away some of the returning students, or new transfer students, who also wanted to live with us.”
Minor found an extra 100 temporary rooms at the Campus View Apartments to help ease Mizzou’s residential life housing crunch.
Mizzou officials said it’s recently been a challenge to find rooms for all of their students because of record enrollments. However, they have never turned away a freshman from campus housing.
Nearly 400 Mizzou students will have to find a new place to stay in January.
Students living in Mark Twain Hall can expect to move out at the end of the fall semester for renovations.
