The FAA's operating authority expired Saturday, which forced a partial shutdown of the agency. It also shut the door on the agency's ability to collect ticket taxes.
Some airlines opted to increase fares to make up for the loss in taxes. Senators are blasting the airline industry for the price hike and asking officials to put the profits into an account to support federal aviation programs, or roll back the fare increases.
The IRS is asking airlines to refund ticket taxes to customers who purchased their ticket prior Saturday but are just now taking their trips. Their website says airlines should refund them just as they would refund an unused and refundable ticket.
Lawmakers sent a letter to industry officials on Tuesday and told them unauthorized collection of federal ticket taxes could have serious negative repercussions for the industry.
Do you think airlines should have to refund taxes? Are you taking a trip soon and expecting taxes to be refunded? Should airlines have increased ticket prices after the taxes expired?
