It has become an annual tradition in Jefferson City. Last weekend about 200 runners took part in the fifth annual Kyle Billington Memorial 5K Run.
Billington didn't play any sports at Jefferson City High School, but he developed a passion for running after graduation.
"He got to where he would run every day, not matter the temperature, hot or cold," said Kevin Jungmeyer, Kyle's dad. "And if he couldn't go outside, he would come to our house and run on a treadmill."
Billington's life was tragically cut short five years ago. He was killed in a car accident at the age of 27.
Now in its fifth year, the memorial run has raised over $25,000 to provide scholarships and support for the Jays track and field program. More importantly, it allows family and friends to come together every year to remember the life of Kyle Billington.
"He as a really upbeat person, always positive, just a happy person," said Rob Clark, a longtime friend of Billington. "It was tough to lose him at such a young age. We take this day every year and everybody gets together and we remember him."
"I just want to keep his name going," said Debbie Jungmeyer, Kyle's mom. "I don't want anybody to forget."
