Officials broke ground on the new interchange Monday morning.
The $7.4 million project will also provide a new road to the new St. Mary's Health Center.
Economic development money from 2008 is funding the project.
State Senator Mike Kehoe said, "When you have a project that will start the development of a new heath center here in Jefferson City that is a fantastic advantage and leads to the quality of life we already have here in Jefferson City, I think the underpass will lead to even more development in this area."
Starting in Mid-August 179 will close for about 70 days. The project will be completed in the fall of 2012.
