Update: Tuesday July 12th at 11:05 a.m.:

Fulton residents Tuesday morning got a chance to hear the details and give their opinions on the proposed revisions of the city’s animal ordinance.

One of the biggest changes is the new requirement to register any dog, cat or ferret. The registration includes paying a $10 fee and mandatory rabies vaccinations.

The ordinance also includes a dangerous animal clause, where extra steps like proof of liability insurance, have to be taken if animal control determines your pet to be a public hazard.

Tethering an animal to a post all day and night will also be off limits.

The ordinance does not include any breed specific restrictions.

Mayor LeRoy Benton says the city council is expected to have a first reading next month. The ordinance is scheduled to take affect January 1st.

There are two more public forums regarding the animal ordinance changes. The first is Thursday at 7:00 a.m at the Fulton McDonald’s. The final forum is July 20th at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

Original Story:

The first of three forums concerning proposed changes to Fulton's animal control ordinance is taking place Tuesday morning.

These proposed changes come after two separate pit bull attacks earlier this year.

Mayor LeRoy Benton will talk about the new aspects of the ordinance and take questions from residents.

Tuesday's meeting is at 7 a.m. at Finally Tammy's. Two more forums are scheduled for Thursday and next Wednesday.

The ordinance can be found at fultonmo.org/aco.
