Several area residents have called and emailed the newsroom reporting text messages that look like they are from Legends Bank.
Not so, according to Legend's Bank Vice President Tom Klebba. In an email, Klebba said the text message is a scam.
The message area customers are receiving reads "LEGENDS BANK ALERT: Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED. Please call:
573-202-6414
."
Klebba said when you call that number, it's not active, which leads some to reply to the text. Then, personal information is requested, including debit/credit card numbers and pin numbers.
Legends Bank is reminding people to ignore these types of text messages and not respond to them. If you have provided any personal financial data in connection with this, or any other scam, please call
1.800.383.8000
to report your debit card compromised or call
1.800.423.7503
to report your credit card that was compromised in connection with the scam.
Both customers and non-customers have reported the text messages, so authorities believe the fraudsters obtained a variety of local numbers and text messaged them in hopes of getting replies.
