Columbia police lost 6,300 videos from patrol vehicles' dashboard cameras when a server crashed.
Only a few of the videos contained useful evidence, accoridng to Columbia police. The problem happened last week when a server that stores the camera videos crashed after repeated malfunctions.
Police told The Columbia Tribune that usually servers survive the loss of a hard drive, but that they lost too much information to be able to recreate the information.
The server is currently running again. A new one would cost the department $22,000.
The Columbia Tribune reported Thursday that any videos from the 60 days before the server crash that were not tagged as important evidence and backed up on DVD are gone.
