Two levees were breached in Northwest Missouri on Monday, causing road closures and home evacuations.
One levee, five miles south of Hamburg, Iowa, has a 50-foot wide hole in it. The water is expected to reach the Hamburg area on Tuesday. The breach was in Atchison County.
The water punched a 75-foot wide hole in a levee in Holt County. Residents in the Big Lake area were forced to evacuate. The community is home to about 150 residents. Most had already left by the time the breach happened, but the remaining 30 residents were told to leave their homes. The Army Corps of Engineers is expecting an additional levee breach in Holt County in the coming days.
Officials are prepared to close 100 miles of I29 in Iowa and Missouri due to rising waters. The closure will begin at Iowa Highway 2 and go south to Rock Port, Mo. That will only close about 30 miles of highway, but officials are already making plans to close I29 near Council Bluffs, Iowa due to rising waters.
All of Highway 333 in both Iowa and Missouri will also close because of flooding. The road closures are expected to happen by Thursday.
