COLUMBIA, MO. -- Update: Monday, May 2 at 3:40 p.m.
As word of Osama Bin Laden’s death quickly spread around the world, celebrations broke out at various locations including Mizzou’s Greek Town.
Hundreds of Mizzou students paraded through the streets while chanting U.S.A.
Students sang the Star-Spangled Banner in celebration of Osama Bin Laden’s death. Most of the Mizzou students were about 10 years old during the 911 attacks.
Alpha Delta Pi Member Ally Kleinow said, “It was insane in a good way. It was really exciting to be a part of something this big and something that we are never going to forget. It was so nice to be all unified as a campus. Not only was it just Greek, it was all students of Mizzou and as Americans.”
On Monday morning, students cleaned up their mess in less than an hour. City crews removed toilet paper on trees and power lines.
University of Missouri Police Officers blocked off a couple of streets to prevent vehicles from entering the celebration. They made no arrests. Police reported no fights or injuries.
MUPD Captain Brian Weimer said, “Of course, anytime you get out in the streets like that there is a danger there. We always need to keep that in mind. Typically, the officers are there just for your safety. They weren’t looking for people causing problems or issues. They were just making sure that everybody was safe.”
Most of these students remember where they were when the Twin Towers fell in New York. They’ll never forget the loss of life and the brave men and women of the United States military that continue the fight against terrorism.
Members of our KRCG crew spotted first round draft pick Aldon Smith, and former MU Tiger Martin Rucker joining in the celebrations.
Original Story:
As word of Osama Bin Laden’s death quickly spread around the world, celebrations broke out at various locations, including Times Square and Ground Zero in New York City and just outside the White House.
Celebrations also broke out right here in Mid-Missouri. A crowd of what appeared to be thousands show up on Mizzou’s campus in Greek Town, waving flags and showing support for U.S. troops.
Toilet paper was flying across phone and power lines while chants of "U.S.A" rang through Richmond avenue. While there, our KRCG crew even spotted 1st round draft pick Aldon Smith, and former MU Tiger Martin Rucker joining in the celebrations.
The celebrations forced police to block off a couple entrances into Greek Town as students celebrated into the early morning hours Monday.
