It doesn't matter why you waited to file your taxes at the last minute, what's important is getting the correct postage. You can't simply drop a tax return in a mail box after the Post Office is closed. Postal workers collected the mail at closing time and post marked it.

We found a lot of people driving up to blue mail boxes who thought as long as they got their returns in the mail by midnight they would be properly post marked.

“I had no idea”, was the reaction got from Steve Vaugh.

Hazel Whitey told us she thought postal workers would pick up the mail at midnight too.

But, that's just not the case. When area Post offices closed at regular time, the mail was sorted. After the Post Office is closed you have to get postage from an automated postal machine in order to be post marked Monday. Those machines are located at the Jefferson Street office in Jefferson City and the downtown office in Columbia.
