Governor Nixon signed an unemployment assistance bill into law Wednesday.
It will provide 20 additional weeks of unemployment assistance to Missourians who have exhausted regular state benefits and other emergency federal benefits.
State labor officials estimate the extended assistance will offer immediate help to a little more than 10,000 Missourians who are looking for work.
The Governor points out those who qualify for the extended assistance will have to continue looking for work.
"Folks who receive this additional assistance must uphold their end of the bargain, and keep looking for work, making contact with potential employers, and checking in with our state career centers,” Governor Nixon said.
Payments should begin in just a few days.
