JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Wednesday the House Special Standing Committee unveiled a proposed redistricting map since Missouri will soon have one less congressional seat.

This is all due to Missouri's recent population loss shown by the 2010 Census.

Census results said Missouri's population is growing at a slower rate than the nations average and the greatest loss was in St. Louis with a nearly 6% population decline.

Republican head of the House redistricting committee John Deal said the committee did what they thought was best for Missouri.

"The map is really very compact and I think the committee has done a very good job and I appreciate everyone's help over the past couple of weeks with your input and guidance on it,” Diehl said.

In response to the House Special Standing Committee’s proposal a Missouri House Democrat has proposed an alternative to a congressional redistricting map offered by Diehl.

The new plan by Ron Casey, of Jefferson County, would consolidate the two St. Louis city districts into one -- as also suggested by Diehl.

But Casey would keep Jefferson County within a single district while Diehl would divide it among three.

Diehl wants to divide up mid-Missouri. Casey would place it all in a new district stretching from Cass County on the Kansas border to Audrain County in the northeast.

Two GOP congressional incumbents -- Vicki Hartzler and Blaine Luetkemeyer -- both live within those boundaries.

Under Diehl’s plan, newly-elected congresswoman Vicki Hartzler's district would no longer include Cole County, but would instead take in Boone County.

Cole county would become part of Blaine Luetkemeyer's redesigned district.

Cole County Presiding Commissioner Marc Ellinger said the county is getting a raw deal in the new redistricting in reference to the proposal by the republican.

He believes Cole County’s needs and influence would take a back seat to those in Metro St. Louis.

Casey, who serves on the redistricting panel, offered his plan Friday.

Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, where committee members could vote on the final map.
