JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- An unexpected layoff at the City of Eldon left six employees without jobs last Friday.
City Administrator, Frank Schoneboom confirmed Monday that three staff and three supervisory positions were eliminated after the city combined the Street, Water, Waste water, and Grounds maintenance Departments. The departments now fall under the umbrella of one department called the Public Works Department. By combining the departments the city expects to save about $250,000 per year.
Schoneboom said these were not “budget cuts” but described it as more of a simple reorganization. He said the employment cuts will increase efficiencies at the city and will not cause any change to city services.
Schoneboom said the lay-offs were difficult to do and he's sorry the city had to do it.
All six employees were given severance packages and compensated for earned vacation time.
