COLUMBIA, MO. -- A year long recycling experiment is over in Columbia.
About 1,800 homes participated in a pilot project to replace Columbia’s Blue Bag Recycling Program with a blue bin for beverage containers and a green bin for paper products.
Between March of last year and February of this year, the pilot recycling program collected more than 500,000 pounds of recyclables in some Westside Columbia neighborhoods.
That is nearly a 50% increase from the year before.
City Officials are asking participants to fill out a survey to help them determine if the bins should replace blue bags.
Waste Minimization Supervisor Layli Terrill said, “It’s a survey of the pilot project. We want our citizens to be honest with us. We want to know how they actually feel about the bins. We have a comment section where they can tell us something that was beyond the scope of the survey.”
The recycle bin surveys must be completed by April 30.
Columbia City Council Members will eventually make the final decision on whether to use the bins or blue bags for recycling.
