State workers and schools will hold their breath as Governor Jay Nixon addresses Missouri in his 2011 State of the State speech Wednesday night.
The governor will present his planned budget for the fiscal year to a joint session of the Missouri Legislature at 7 P.M. That speech will take place in the House Chamber of the capital building.
One of the main items of concern in the state's budget will be education. The state lawmakers and Governor Nixon have both said that keeping school's funding the same as last year would be a major accomplishment because K-12 schools will not get the full amount of funds that is called for by Missouri's funding formula, according to Nixon's budget director Linda Luebbering.
The current budget caused school busing, college scholarships and basic aid to public colleges and universities to take cuts from their budgets. The new budget that the governor will propose tonight will start in July, when the new fiscal year begins.
Following Governor's Nixon, Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder will deliver the Republican resonse to the address.
