KANSAS CITY, MO. -- A Missouri man has been sentenced to federal prison in a scheme that cost at least 23 stores a total of $242,000.

The Kansas City Star reported that 34-year-old Jason M. Hendricks of Clinton will serve five years without parole under the sentence imposed Friday.

Prosecutors said Hendricks bought merchandise using counterfeit checks, insufficient-fund checks and checks written on closed accounts between July 2008 and March 2009 in three states.

One of the instances involved using two bad checks to buy more than $20,000 in merchandise from Nebraska Furniture Mart. Afterward, the goods were taken from Kansas to Harrisonville and stored in a garage there.

Authorities said Hendricks sold some of the merchandise online and gave some items to friends.
