JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- The president of the Humane Society of the United States is trying to discourage Missouri lawmakers from repealing the voter-approved dog breeder law.
Wayne Pacelle met with lawmakers Wednesday to discuss his organization and the new law.
The law limits the number of dogs a breeder may have and how frequently they can be bred. It also requires animals be provided veterinary care and given outdoor access.
Missouri lawmakers already have filed legislation to repeal the law, which critics say could make it more difficult for legitimate dog breeders to stay in business.
Pacelle says the Legislature should respect the voters' decision.
Pacelle visited Columbia back in September to encourage Missouri voters to pass Proposition B, which at the time also was known as the "Puppy Mill Bill."
"Prop B is an effort to enhance the standards to have better treatments for dogs in Missouri. Missouri has 3,000 puppy mills churning out forty percent of all dogs in the pet trade in this country," Pacelle told KRCG in September. "This is an opportunity for people of Missouri to take a stand for the humane treatment for animals."
Proposition B passed by a slim margin in November.
