JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- A state audit says employees of the Missouri Department of Mental Health are racking up excessive amounts of overtime.
The report by Auditor Susan Montee says the department paid about $48 million of overtime in the past three years.
In 2009, the audit found that 40 employees at state habilitation centers for the developmentally disabled had overtime payments that exceeded the regular paychecks.
One employee at the Marshall Habilitation Center was paid almost $99,000 for overtime during a two-year period - more than double the person's regular salary of about $45,000 during that time.
The audit cites the department for lacking a policy limiting overtime.
The department said its divisions are now implementing overtime limits and will evaluate whether it's cheaper to hire more employees.
