(AP) -- Governor Nixon has some explaining to do.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon made lots of promises while campaigning in 2008. Many remain unfulfilled at the midpoint of his term.
They've been supplanted by economic realities that have led Nixon to define success as abiding by the spirit of his campaign.
Nixon has settled for less than he wanted on health care, higher education and public school funding. But he tells The Associated Press he's been a "solid steward for the economy we've had."
The Democratic governor is planning to seek re-election in November 2012. He is likely to be challenged by Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.
Kinder contends Nixon promised virtually anything to anyone during his campaign, even though it was apparent before the election that the economy was getting worse, not better.
