Incoming Missouri House Speaker Steven Tilley has ordered a ten percent reduction in pay for Legislative Assistants. They're the employees who work directly for legislators. From January through June Legislative Assistants will work 40 hours per week, that's up from their usual 35 hours per week.
Then July through December, Assistants will be required to work 80 percent of their schedule, which is 32 hours per week. During that time they'll also only be paid 80 percent of their salaries.
Adam Crumbliss, "We're in a transition point, we have a new speaker elect coming in, his name is Steven Tilley. Speaker Elect Tilley believes that the General Assembly, and the House of Representatives in particular should continue the effort to lead by example, and is looking for ways to continue to reduce the legislative budget."
KRCG talked to a few Legislative Assistants Monday, they declined to go on camera. They said they don't mind the 40 hour work week, but the pay cut is going to be tough to take. They said they think they're unfairly being singled out from other state employees.
