JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Missouri got a missing moon rock back just in time for Christmas.

The rock was one of 50 given to each of the states collected in 1973 during the Apollo 17 Mission.

At the time Kit Bond received the rock because he was Missouri's Governor.

He took it with him after he was elected to the U.S. Senate but it was forgotten about during Bond's term.

His staff found the rock while cleaning out the retiring senator's office in Washington.

Missouri had been among 15 states that couldn't account for their moon rocks.

The rock will be on display at Governor Nixon's office through January.
