COLUMBIA, MO. -- The Columbia Police Department's deputy chief resigned under the cloud of a sex scandal.
Deputy Chief Tom Dresner announced his retirement Monday after 26 years on the job.
Police said Dresner told Chief Ken Burton about his affair with a subordinate Friday, Dec. 3 and the next day Burton asked Dresner to resign.
"Anytime someone ends their career I think you know for any reason when you've had a long career in police work it's always very, very difficult and of course under these circumstances it just makes it more difficult," Public Information Officer Jill Wieneke said.
The department said the female police officer involved will not face consequences because she wasn't at fault.
Dresner worked for the department for 26 years and served as interim chief in 2008.
