ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Prosecutors are charging a 20-year-old with assault and armed criminal action for allegedly shooting a St. Louis police officer, who remains in critical condition.

Police allege that Kim Dwayne Cobb shot the officer during a traffic stop Wednesday night.

Police say the officer was patting Cobb down outside the car when Cobb pulled a gun and shot him.

Officials aren't releasing the officer's name, saying only that he is a 25-year old who has been on the force for two years. He underwent surgery early Thursday.

The officer's partner was shot in the leg, but returned fire and hit Cobb, who fled the scene. Cobb was later arrested. He remains hospitalized.

Cobb did not have a listed phone number and did not yet have an attorney listed.
