JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Imagine turning the key of a brand new four bedroom home, knowing not only that it's yours but you helped build it.
That dream is on it's way to becoming a reality for one Jefferson City Family.
The first walls of River City Habitat for Humanity's 67th home were put up Saturday afternoon.
Volunteers attended a framing ceremony in the 800 block of Montana Street to bless the build.
“Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical ministry and our volunteers come from all walks of life," Vice President of River City Habitat for Humanity Marlene Medin said. "We have civic groups that volunteer, individuals that are just interested in learning about the building process. Our families are all here on the site helping each other build."
With the help of nails, lumber, hammers, and other tools volunteers will transform the construction site into a beautiful home.
However, to be able to live in a Habitat for Humanity home there are some requirements.
“Our system, Habitat for Humanity actually is a lender," Medin said. "We sell homes to people in need. Our families have to qualify by demonstrating a need for housing and ability to pay and the willingness to partner. Our families put in between 350 to 450 hours building their homes and home for other families.”
With every home built in Jefferson City, one is built in another part of the world.
Currently River City Habitat for Humanity has five active sites in Jefferson City and will sell seven in 2010.
The Habitat for Humanity affiliate has led the fight against poverty since 1993.
