COLUMBIA, MO -- Columbia College will become the newest tenant of the old federal building in downtown Columbia
The announcement was made during a new conference in Columbia Friday morning. The U.S. Department of Education granted Columbia College use of the building at 608 East Cherry for educational purposes.
The school’s nursing program and technical support center for the online learning program will move into the building.
Right now, the nursing program is located in a converted church on campus. The online learning center is in the old Columbia Photo store. Both programs will benefit substantially more space.
It will take Columbia College about a year to prepare the building for its use. College officials hope it will be ready for students in the Fall of 2011.
The federal government will remain in control of the building. It will be vacated by the YouZeum, an interactive children's health exhibit which has struggled financially.
During the news conference, Columbia College President Gerald Brouder declined to discuss any financial aspects of the voluntary retransfer.
