NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) -- A state conservation official said the death of a black bear that was hit by a vehicle in southwest Missouri provides some proof that the animals are making a comeback in the region.

Newton County Deputy Scott Stanley said a vehicle hit the black bear Wednesday afternoon near Neosho. The Missouri Department of Conservation recommended that the bear be euthanized because it could not use its hind legs.

Scott Burger, a protection district supervisor with the department, said it was the second black bear euthanized this year in southwest Missouri after a collision with a car. The first was in May near Sarcoxie.

The Neosho Daily News reports that Burger said the accidents show that the American black bear is wandering north out of Arkansas, where it has been reintroduced.
