COLUMBIA, MO. -- The Columbia Water and Light has issued a cautionary boil advisory for customers in the 10 apartment buildings on Whitegate Drive.

An 8-inch water main between Whitegate Drive and Towne Drive and Sylvan Lane broke late Thursday afternoon.

Customers are urged to take the following precautions:

-Boil water for three minutes prior to using it for cooking or drinking.

-Do not use ice from an automatic ice maker. Remake ice with water that has been boiled.

-Disinfect dishes and food contact surfaces by immersing for one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water.

Crews are working to fix the water main. It will take officials 48 hours to test samples and lift the boil advisory.
