JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Members of the Jefferson City High School Chorale were on a winning streak this year.
All of the high school’s music programs have a wonderful history of doing well in competitions all across the country.
The Jefferson City High School Chorale recently won best choral sound and best vocal tone in a competition in Branson. The men’s choir, women’s choir, the chamber choir and the chorale also received gold ratings at this year’s Heritage Singing Festival in Washington, D.C. This year’s competitions are over. That means senior and Chorale President Gavin Juckette is retiring his golden throat as a Jaybird.
“Ever since elementary school when we had our music classes, I’ve always loved singing," Juckette said. "It’s just been a big part of my life.”
Seniors like Theressa Mello said things have been very emotional as the school year winds down.
“You have to be able to understand one another, work with them and criticize each other in positive ways," Mello said. "You need to be able to deal with it and sound good. That’s what makes our family and makes us sound good.”
All of the students agree they owe all of their musical success to Chorale Director Beth Dampf. Dampf said her class is more like her family.
“I’m very proud of this group of kids," Dampf said. "They’ve worked hard. We’ve really come together as a family. They have not let anything stand in their way. We’ve really come together as a group. We really do love each other as a family. That takes care of everything.”
Through music, Dampf said her students learn how to be responsible citizens and how to be respectful of others.
The Jefferson City High School Chorale has been invited to sing at Carnegie Hall.
