KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A 66-year-old man is in custody suspected of placing a suspicious object at the federal courthouse in downtown Kansas City and calling in a bomb threat.
The object was a mesh cloth cooler that contained two phone books.
The U.S. Attorney's office charged Manuel Garcia on Wednesday. He was arrested and held pending a detention hearing.
Prosecutors said Garcia formerly had a Kansas City address but is now believed to be homeless.
The Charles Evans Whittaker Courthouse was evacuated Monday morning after the cooler was spotted near an entrance with a note referring to an explosion or detonation.
While the cooler was being inspected, a 911 caller mentioned other explosive devices at the courthouse. Prosecutors say a 911 supervisor recognized Garcia's voice.
Garcia did not yet have an attorney.
