COLUMBIA -- Area dignitaries and Boone Hospital Center administrators celebrated a milestone in the construction of the hospital’s new patient tower.

Thursday’s forecast of cold, wet weather forced hospital officials to install the tower’s top steel beam during Wednesday’s warmer conditions.

On Thursday morning, administrators used a flat screen television to show a video of the installation event while dozens of people gathered in the hospital’s parking garage.

Hospital administrators say the event marks the halfway point of the patient tower’s construction.

Boone Hospital Center President Dan Rothery said, “Affixed to the beam are about a thousand signatures from many of our employees who wanted to, in a small way, express their thoughts and feelings about working for Boone Hospital and the excitement and anticipation of what this project is going to be like when it’s all said and done.”

The new patient tower is planned to be completed in the spring of next year.

The tower will include 128 private patient rooms.
