NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) -- A man from Diamond was killed and another was injured when their canoe was swept over a dam in southwest Missouri.

The Missouri State Water Patrol says 18-year-old Westly Wood died Monday afternoon near a dam in Neosho on Shoal Creek.

The water patrol says Wood and 20-year-old Houston Lietzke, also of Diamond, were caught in the undertow after their canoe went over the dam.

Neosho Fire Chief Greg Hickman says rescuers struggled for more than 30 minutes to pull Lietzke out of the water. He was taken to a Joplin hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The Joplin Globe reports that Wood's body was recovered Monday evening abotu 100 feet from the dam.
