KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton has testified before a federal grand jury and denied any connection between political contributions and his handling of legislation.
The Republican from southeast Missouri says he testified for about an hour Wednesday before a grand jury in Kansas City. He confirmed he is a target of an investigation into alleged bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud.
Federal prosecutors are focused on whether Jetton tried to stymie a 2005 bill regulating sexually oriented businesses after the industry contributed $35,000 to a political committee with ties to a Jetton adviser.
Jetton said he was unaware of the donation when he sent the bill to a committee whose chairman opposed it. But Jetton noted that he ultimately passed a scaled-back version of the legislation.
