JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- New numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show a drop in Missouri's cattle and sheep numbers in 2009.
The number of goats and cattle in Missouri declined 2 percent between 2009 and 2010. Nationally, the number of goats and cattle dropped 1 percent.
The USDA count showed 4.15 million cattle and 95,000 goats in the state.
USDA Statistics Director Gene Danekas said the drop is due to uncertainty in the cattle market. He said the goat market seems to be leveling off after growing in the state for several years.
The number of cattle being fed for slaughter and the number of milk goats remained steady.
