LONDON (AP) — A party official in Northern Ireland says the leader of the government will temporarily step down amid a damaging adultery scandal.

An official with Northern Ireland's Protestant Democratic Unionist Party says that First Minister Peter Robinson will step down for six weeks and be replaced by party colleague Arlene Foster.

He spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because he did not want to be seen pre-empt Robinson's announcement due to come shortly.

Robinson has been under pressure since it was revealed that his wife Iris had a teenage lover and helped him raise tens of thousands of pounds for his business.

The revelations have shaken Northern Ireland's fragile Protestant-Catholic ruling coalition.
