BENTON, Mo. (AP) -- Former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton was facing arraignment Wednesday on charges of hitting a woman in the face and choking her.

The 42-year-old former Republican lawmaker is charged in southeast Missouri's Scott County with one count of second-degree assault. Jetton, who is from Marble Hill, has said he is innocent.

The charge stems from a November incident at the Sikeston home of the alleged victim.

According to a police report, the woman reported that she faded in and out of consciousness after Jetton gave her wine. She claimed Jetton struck her and choked her several times, and said she recalled waking up while Jetton was having sex with her.
