A Boonville doctor who violated state and federal controlled drug laws is trying to renew her state registration to distribute prescriptions containing controlled substances.

Doctor Janet Akremi's registration through the Missouri Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs expired late last month.

State authorities put her under probation in March for not keeping proper records of painkiller prescriptions. She worked out a settlement agreement with the state that allows her to write prescriptions for non-controlled drugs such as birth control pills, insulin, blood pressure pills and heart medication. The agreement bans her from distributing dangerous and addictive drugs such as morphine and other highly addictive pain killers. In addition, Akremi's state registration expired on September 30.

State authorities aren't saying why they didn't renew her registration immediately as they do with most renewal applications. "Receipt records of drugs purchased were not maintained so that there was not a full, accurate record of what drugs were entering the practice," according to Michael Boeger, from the bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. " Dispensing logs were not complete to show exactly who were dispensing drugs that left the practice. Prescriptions were written to patients, but not documented in their charts, so there would be no records for other practitioners to know what care a patient may have been receiving."

Several of Doctor Akremi's patients with chronic pain contacted us and told us Akremi was the only doctor they trusted to treat them, so they no longer have their medications. Akremi would not agree to an on-camera interview on the advice of her attorney. State authorities told us they couldn't comment on the status of akremi's renewal application to prescribe pain killers and other addictive drugs.

Akremi also recently resigned her post at Cooper County Memorial hospital. While hospital administrators said she did not cite a specific reason for her departure, they do tell KRCG News it would be difficult to keep working at the facility without the ability to prescribe certain medication.
