Fire destroys Columbia auto repair shop

Fire destroyed Columbia’s Mid-Missouri Auto Works just after 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Someone called 9-1-1 and reported fire and smoke coming from a garage attached to the car repair business on Monroe Street.

Firefighters had flames under control in about ten minutes.

One employee was in the business at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.

Investigators said the fire started in the back of a vehicle.

Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Frasier said, “An employee stated that there was a generator in the back of the vehicle that may have ignited the vehicle and spread to the rest of the structure.”

Fire investigators an initial damage estimate of $75,000.
