An estimated 1,100 to 1,200 customers of Embarq in Jefferson City are without phone service at this hour.

The company said a cable in a manhole became saturated after a downpour yesterday cutting off service to residences and businesses in the McKay Park and Southridge areas.

Spokesman Greg Gaffke said crews have been at work since yesterday trying to restore service.

He couldn't give an estimate when the phones will be back on line.
