(AP) -- SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Witnesses have told Marshfield police a bus ran a red light before crashing into a car and sending 16 children to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Springfield News-Leader reports police believe the 63-year-old bus driver continued through a red light without stopping Thursday morning and struck a car in the intersection.

The bus was taking two Marshfield Elementary third-grade classes on a field trip to the Discovery Center in Springfield when it crashed around 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

Most of the 50 students aboard the bus were uninjured.

The investigation continues and no citations have been issued.
