Members of the Columbia Fire Department want to remind you to be careful when using Christmas lights and other holiday decorations.
Columbia fire officials are holding their 11th annual program called Operation Red Wreath.
The challenge is keeping the lights red.
A wreath with red holiday lights sits in front of Columbia’s main fire station from November 30 through January 2.
If a holiday-related fire happens, one of the red bulbs is replaced with a white one.
Fire officials say cooking fires are the most common fires during the holiday season.
Columbia Fire Department Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach said, “We find unattended cooking because there are a lot of activities going on. People are in the kitchen. They might be distracted. Cooking fires are increased throughout the holiday season. These are very, very preventable fires.”
Fire officials want you to help them keep their wreath red by using extreme caution when cooking, burning candles and using your fireplace during the holiday season.
