A line of severe thunderstorms swept through the area Tuesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, damaging winds, and some moderately sized hail.

These storms were associated with a potent weather system that warmed up the area to record highs on Monday, and brought plenty of moisture to fuel the storms that fired throughout the day. Behind this system, much colder, more January-like weather is expected.

The damage reports were mainly localized in Cole and Callaway counties.

Several powerlines were down on the west side of Jefferson City, in the Apache Flats area. A large tree was uprooted on Rainbow drive, and the Pioneer Trail Elementary School lost power for a while, but school still went on as scheduled.

A barn and a building were damaged on the west side of Jefferson City.

As of late this afternoon, 1,200 Jefferson City residents were without power.

The severe thunderstorm threat has now diminished in the area.
