Two senior citizens had to be taken to the hospital after a fire destroyed their senior housing apartment building.

The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. Friday at the Jacksonville Senior Citizens Apartments in Cairo, just north of Moberly.

A resident woke up to see smoke and flames and called 911.

Offcials said Highway Patrol Troopers were able to rescue the 5 residents out of the burning building.

30 area firefighters were on the scene throughout the night.

Cairo Fire Chief Harold Muehe says pumps and hydrants were freezing in the single digit temperature as they battled the blaze.

The 4 senior apartments in the building are considered a total loss. The residents are staying with relatives and friends.

One couple fell as they were being evaculated from the building. They were treated at Moberly Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
