Burglaries during Spring Break up from last year

The numbers are in, and burglaries in Columbia over Spring Break were up this year compared to last year.

Columbia Police said during Spring Break this year from March 24th through April 3rd, there were 21 residential burglaries reported.

During Spring Break in 2011, there were 14 residential burglaries and 1 commercial burglary. In 2010, there were 10 residential burglaries and 5 commercial burglaries reported.

The statistics are steadier for the Winter Break time period. From December 17th, 2011 through January 16, 2012 there were 74 reported burglaries. The same time frame from 2010-2011, there were 73 burglaries; and from 2009 through 2010 there were 70 burglaries.

Officers said during the most recent Spring Break, the burglaries were not centered in one part of town. Reports came from the north, central and south parts of town.

Police said last year’s total burglary reports were up from the year before. Their records indicate there were 798 total burglaries for 2011, 552 for 2010 and 692 for 2009.
