(AP) -- COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Colleges across the U.S. are opening food banks to feed hungry students as well as low-paid employees and even some struggling professors.
The student-run Tiger Pantry at the University of Missouri reports giving free food to nearly 150 people, plus their families, since its early October start.
The pantry is among a growing number of programs at universities. Organizers say it's both a response to a weak economy and a sign of the latest trend in student activism. The Missouri program was modeled on a similar effort at the University of Arkansas.
The University of Mississippi and Auburn University are also starting campus food pantries, joining Central Florida, Georgia, Iowa State, Oregon State and West Virginia. The University of California, Los Angeles deploys crisis response teams to help struggling students.
